The Humane Society of Louisiana

The Humane Society of Louisiana

Founded in 1988 and based in New Orleans, the Humane Society of Louisiana is a private animal protection charity. They are the only private charity of this kind that speaks out for all animals of all kinds. Half of Louisiana’s parishes are without any kind of animal care services, meaning when an animal is hit by a car in most places in the state, there is no agency to respond. When an animal is being neglected or abused, there is no one to help if the police don’t take action – and they often don’t. There are virtually no programs to help wildlife or other animals in need.

This is why the work the Humane Society of Louisiana does is so vital. At any given time between its three locations, the organization cares for hundreds – if not thousands – of cats, dogs, horses, bunnies, and any other animal in need of help. The organization has created diverse programs intended not only to touch the lives of individual animals but to transform the state into a more compassionate place.

In addition to their numerous programs, the Humane Society oftentimes needs to quickly act during natural disasters. It was during Hurricanes Laura, Delta and Zeta when they first reached out to Catalyst Pet for help. And we couldn’t be more thrilled to do so.

“Not only have we had an overwhelming number of animals entering our shelter and our two sanctuaries, we transported more than 1,500 shelter pets during the hurricanes, delivering supplies to assist pet owners in affected areas and across the state with pet food, supplies, and veterinary services,” said Brandy Schmid, disaster relief coordinator at the nonprofit. “Since we are not government funded, nor affiliated with any national groups, we rely strictly on donations, and Catalyst Pet has been a tremendous help and a true partner from the moment we reached out to them – we’re so grateful!”
