Orphan Angels Cat Sanctuary and Adoption Center had a problem most shelters would recognize: a building that wasn't keeping up with its mission.
Orphan Angels is a no-kill, free-roam cat sanctuary and adoption center in Erie, Pennsylvania. Free-roam means cats live together openly in shared spaces instead of stacked cages. Giving them room to climb, nap, play and just be cats. For years, Orphan Angels was able to operate that way with most of its cats, but the building had limits. Some cats, especially those with medical needs or on prescription diets, still had to be caged. And the building itself was, quite literally, falling apart. The cats weren't helping matters. Clever as ever, they'd discovered the drop ceilings and were taking them down piece by piece.
The team also wanted to be truly free-roam, not just for the easy cats, but for the shy ones, the medical cases, the ones on prescription diets. So they made a decision that would reshape the whole organization: rebuild the space and rebuild the approach with it.
A Year of Renovations
Construction began in April 2024 and went for nearly a year. The shelter stayed closed to the public except by appointment, and many of its cats lived in foster homes while the work went on. In February 2025, Orphan Angels held a grand reopening, welcoming back visitors to a genuinely new space.
The redesigned sanctuary is fully free-roam with no cages. Separate rooms with glass walls give cats safety, visibility and freedom. Every surface was chosen with sanitation and disease prevention in mind, without losing the warmth that makes a sanctuary feel like home.
Care for Cats Who Need It Most
These renovations have been life changing. Orphan Angels can now care for cats it never could before—cats with leukemia, kittens with cerebellar hypoplasia, a paralyzed and incontinent cat, cats with complex medical needs and specialized diets.
As both a sanctuary and an adoption center, Orphan Angels knows some of its cats will be there for a long time, some for life. The goal was to give every cat more than just a place to stay. They want to give them a life that feels safe, enriching and dignified.
A Cat-Only Clinic for the Community
Orphan Angels also opened a cat-only veterinary clinic on site. The clinic offers x-rays, ultrasound, dental care, emergency services and preventative care, all at affordable rates. For Erie-area cat parents facing tough decisions about veterinary bills, it's a meaningful addition to the community.
Small Details, Big Difference
Even the smallest choices shaped the new space. For example, switching to Catalyst Pet litter helped transform the environment. Now there’s no not dust coating every surface. The glass walls throughout the space no longer have cloudy barriers, so visitors can see no matter where they stand.
Catalyst Pet is proud to support Orphan Angels and the shelters and rescues like them across the country. Because giving every cat a better story starts with giving them a place that's built for it. To learn more about our rescue and shelter program, click here.
