Purrrlandia: A Cafe Where Compassion and Cat Care Come Together

Nestled in Thousand Oaks, California—just outside Los Angeles—Purrrlandia is redefining what it means to connect with cats. Part rescue, part cafe, and fully heart-driven, Purrrlandia’s mission is simple yet powerful: to rescue, rehab and re-home adoptable cats while fostering responsible guardianship and compassionate cat care.

Founded in June 2025 by Kat Killoran—a former financial services professional turned feline advocate—Purrrlandia has already made an incredible impact. In its first 120 days, they celebrated more than 105 cat adoptions, a milestone that reflects both community enthusiasm and the cafe’s thoughtful design.

“People come in for coffee and connection,” Kat says, “and often leave having found their forever friend.”

From Finance to Felines
Kat spent two decades in finance before following her heart to animal welfare. What began as a few hours volunteering at a shelter quickly turned into full weekends spent cleaning, feeding and comforting cats—often crafting colorful blankets and toys to make their kennels more cheerful and enriching. Her experiences revealed a need for spaces where cats could truly be themselves, and people could understand them better. Inspired by cat cafés she visited in Japan, Kat decided to bring that concept home, blending rescue, community, and education into one delicious and beautiful experience.

A Space Designed for Connection
Purrrlandia’s cat lounge and cafe operate side by side but are thoughtfully separated by glass walls and individual HVAC systems, so even those allergic to cats can visit the cafe with no concerns. Visitors can enjoy drinks and treats in the cafe, or schedule time in the cat lounge to meet adoptable cats in a serene, open environment. The lounge includes vertical spaces, cozy nooks and observation perches so cats feel secure while guests get to see their personalities unfold. Every visit supports the cats’ care, socialization and comfort. The cat lounge currently houses about 25 kitties, with room for more. However, Kat is strategic about ensuring the right balance of occupancy and room to roam for these felines.

Thanks to a partnership with Best Friends Animal Society, Purrrlandia serves as a foster home and adoption center, offering same-day adoptions to remove barriers in the process. Education is also central to their mission—visitors learn about cat behavior, respecting boundaries, and the importance of spaying and neutering.

Partnering with Catalyst Pet
One of Purrrlandia’s most meaningful collaborations is with Catalyst Pet, known for its sustainable, high-performance cat litter made from upcycled wood fibers. Kat discovered Catalyst long before opening the cafe, when caring for her own cats. “We tried every type of litter,” she recalls, “and Catalyst was hands-down the best. It clumps well, controls odor, doesn’t track everywhere, and lasts longer than others. Plus, it’s so much better for the environment than clay or corn-based litter.”

Even though Purrrlandia could receive free litter through other rescue channels, they chose Catalyst—and now proudly sell it in their retail area. Guests often notice how fresh the litter room smells and ask what they use, giving Kat another opportunity to share a product she believes in.

Looking Ahead
Purrrlandia plans to continue expanding—adding space for mothers and kittens, hosting community events, and helping more cats find their forever homes. For Kat, the cafe is more than a business; it’s a mission to transform how people view and adopt cats. As she puts it, “In shelters, cats can shut down. Here, they thrive. And when they thrive, people fall in love.”
